Driver in crash that killed Yukon deputy minister faces criminal, motor vehicle act charges

One of the drivers in a two-vehicle crash that killed Yukon government deputy minister Michael Prochazka and injured Minister Nils Clarke is facing criminal and motor vehicle act charges, according to Yukon RCMP. 

Police issued a press release on May 15 indicating their investigation has wrapped up regarding the Aug. 2, 2024 collision on the Alaska Highway at the intersection to Swan Haven Drive. 

The release notes that a vehicle travelling south hit another vehicle that was entering the highway. 

Police said that Robert James Smallwood has been charged with Criminal Code charges related to dangerous driving as well as Territorial Motor Vehicle Act charges of careless driving and driving at an unreasonable speed. 

Smallwood is scheduled to appear in court in Whitehorse on June 25. 

Police won’t be releasing more information now that the matter is before the courts, per the release.
