Ban staking no more?

The city may backtrack on its earlier decision to ban mineral staking in Whitehorse.

The city may backtrack on its earlier decision to ban mineral staking in Whitehorse.

The city doesn’t have the jurisdiction to ban staking itself, however, in earlier talks on the Official Community Plan, councillors suggested working with the territory to change the Quartz Mining Act.

At that time, councillors were considering either a 97 per cent or a 100 per cent ban on staking.

Now, they may only request a moratorium.

Some councillors are hesitant to request a full ban, such as Councillor Ranj Pillai, saying council should first discuss the issue with the mining sector.

The city will likely finalize its decision before it presents the Official Community Plan to the public.
