Alpine Yukon hosted the Yukon Cup race at Mount Sima, with a record-breaking 78 registered athletes competing in the territorial event over the weekend of April 5-6.
Meribeth Deen, who is on the board of directors with Alpine Yukon, wrote an email to the News detailing the events that took place on the Dan’s Descent trail of Mount Sima in Whitehorse.
The club split up the two slalom and giant slalom races throughout the two days of events, Deen highlighted. The weekend races involved a large number of registered athletes competing in masters from U18 through to U8 age groups.
Aiden Mills in masters and Ellyann Dinn in U18 won both the giant slalom and slalom, setting the fastest times in the male and female categories despite rain-softened snow and challenging terrain.
Mills, a coach and master’s level racer, secured the men’s best combined time at 1:32.97, while Dinn, a former Arctic Winter Games gold medallist, topped the women’s standings with 1:34.41.
In the female masters category, Deen finished with the overall best combined runs during the slalom and giant slalom races. Deen finished the slalom in 1:42.31 and the giant slalom in 1:43.03.
Among the 78 registered athletes, the U12 female age group had the highest number of competitors in the slalom and giant slalom races, making it the largest category. Emily Rooke had the quickest two combined runs in both events, finishing the slalom race in a time of 1:55.35 and the giant slalom race in 1:55.13.
Alpine Yukon wrapped up the Yukon Cup by awarding medals to the top three finishers in their respective categories.
Deen wrote that the club celebrated a strong season overall, bringing home six gold medals in January during the North Zone Teck races at Hudson Bay Mountain in B.C.
Alpine Yukon racer Josephine De Jager competed at the Western Nationals Championships at Silverstar in B.C. in March and won bronze in the dual slalom, Deen wrote.
