Alexco Resource Corporation awarded $500 bursaries to each of the 10 high school graduates from Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation at the recent First Nations Graduation Ceremony in Whitehorse.

Senior vice-president Tom Fudge, who attended the ceremony, said that the scholarships are a part of a larger program to strengthen relationships and develop local talent.

“I’d love to see some of these students go on and study geology or engineering or skilled labour positions and come on back and work for us.”

Chief Simon Mervyn of the Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation said he is very proud of the graduates, and has seen the quality of education improve significantly for the young people of his community over his lifetime.

“As our First Nations enter into the corporate world - cautiously, mind you, because it’s a vicious world out there - we’re hopeful that our young ones are going to step into a better world.”
