It was with great interest I read the recent press release from Yukon College announcing the suspension of next year’s intake to the Yukon Native Teacher Education Program.
The fact that: “There will be no layoffs or reassignment of staff” begs the question of what role the many “adjunct faculty” play in the life of the college. Since adjunct faculty are contracted by semester, the college has no long-term commitment to them, even if they have provided loyal service for 10, 20 or more years.
So while there will be no layoffs, there will certainly be a loss of employment and income for a number of people. Something of which the press release conveniently makes no mention.
