My mind has been cluttered with this debate ever since it became more prevalent in discourse: What is the difference between a homosexual and a heterosexual, besides sexual preference?

What would be done in a gay club that can’t be done within the existing groups or associations at the school?

One point did arise during conversation: “The need for a gay club is based in camaraderie to share the gay experience in an environment free from persecution.”

This gave me pause.

“So, isn’t that like hacky sack? You can’t do it in the hallways, teachers will condemn you if you frustrate others but you’re free to do it in designated areas. There is no need for an official group. You merely associate and practice your identity during breaks and when school is out. Besides sexual preference, gays are no different than anyone else.”

The response was, “No, in a gay club we would talk about gay culture.”

My response was, “There is no such thing as gay culture. There is a marketed image based purely in consumables and stereotypes. But this isn’t actual culture, as the only demarcation for homosexuality is engaging in sexual acts with the same sex. Therefore, homosexual identity is the exact same as heterosexual identity except for sex. So are the youth asking for a sex club in high school?”

“No, they don’t want to feel excluded, they want to belong to something.”

“Were they excluded from other groups that already existed? And wouldn’t they technically be excluding straight people from their group?”

“No, straight people are welcome.”

Which brought me full circle.

What is the difference between a homosexual and a heterosexual, besides sexual preference?

What would be done in a gay club that can’t be done within the existing groups or associations at the school?
