As yet another unwanted election bears down on us, Yukon gun owners have another opportunity to rid ourselves of the long-gun registry. The only way we will do this is give Larry Bagnell a chance to collect his pension.

As a firearm instructor, I have helped hundreds of gun owners obtain their firearms licences.

The safe storage and licensing sections of gun control make sense and have reduced fatalities.

Incidentally this part of gun control was put in by the Conservatives in Kim Campbell’s brief term. However the long-gun registry has been expensive (more than $1 billion ) and is useless. Ask any policeman if they count on the information in the registry they will tell you no, they have procedures they follow to keep themselves alive.

Bagnell told us he would vote against the registry, but when the time came he supported the Liberals and defeated the private member’s bill proposing to abolish it.

I urge all gun owners and hunters to ask the candidates how they feel about this issue and vote accordingly. We know we can’t trust Bagnell Ð he has had his chance and let us down
