I have serious concerns regarding the Grade 12 curriculum at Watson Lake High School.
My nephew is set to graduate this year and, while visiting recently, he told me that there is only one Grade 12 course being offered this semester, being English 12.
I have asked more questions and found out teachers who were to provide Grade 12 programming were “moved” within the high school to provide additional teaching to the Grade 8 and 9 students.
Students who should graduate in the next two years are anxious, believing the school will not provide the necessary curriculum for them to attain graduation on time.
In light of the recent publications on Yukon’s poor graduation rates, this subject requires further investigation. Publication of the findings in your paper will bring attention to the critical situation at Watson Lake Secondary before the students suffer any further!
Yukon communities deserve fair and equitable treatment, including an effective educational system.
