This whole spring bear hunt in the Yukon is an appalling barbarism.

People who try to justify this practice by claiming that most bears are harvested for food are lying. A vast majority of the people that we have known to kill bears do it just for the sake of killing and will never eat the bear. In the best case, you will have a hide gathering dust in some corner of the house.

These people seem to have completely lost sight of what is right and what is wrong. Whether you follow First Nations’ traditional beliefs, are a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim or a non-believer the moral law is the same: all life is precious and killing any living being is only barely acceptable if it is done to insure your own survival. As humans, we should strive to practise non-violence and compassion towards every living creature, not nurture our lowest instincts, namely the thirst for blood and the “high” that some people seem to get out of the act of killing.
