Open letter to MP Larry Bagnell,

I am writing on behalf of the Public Service Alliance of Canada’s Regional Women’s Committee. We would like to let you know that we are pleased with your party’s position not to support Bill C-391, the repeal of the long-gun registry. We encourage you to vote with your party on this important issue.

As you are aware, it was a Liberal government which implemented the registry in the first place. According to the Canadian Labour Congress, since gun owners were required to register long guns, deaths by guns have been reduced by 50 per cent. The gun registry works. The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police supports it. We believe it has reduced gun violence against women.

As well, the mandatory safety training and positive provisions for secure storage increase safety in homes for all family members.

It is our belief that asking gun owners to continue to take the additional steps of registering their long gun, ensuring that they are trained in its use, and that they properly store their weapon is not asking too much, even for northern communities.
