The Yukon Prospector’s Association is a non-profit society.

The association’s mandate is to protect the rights and freedoms of the independent prospectors in the Yukon territory.

It is not controlled by the Yukon Chamber of Mines or the Yukon government.

It was a sad event last month when an executive of the association presented me with a copy of the association bylaws. The last time a member had examined them was 1987 when an amendment was filed. All of the independent prospectors would agree when I say that full-time government employees, full-time mining industry contractors, executives and geologists are not prospectors.

These people can, and do sometimes prospect. The Yukon Chamber of Mines is the venue for all of these honourable men. Independent prospectors are hardy individuals who regularly risk themselves in the wilderness for very little gain.

We are proud of our accomplishments no matter how small. We do not apologize for our lifestyle. Without us there would be fewer honourable men in the Yukon.

Thank you, to the former president and board of directors for all your past support.

Congratulations, Mike Burke, on your new position as the chief geologist of Golden Predator.

Best wishes on your new career in the private sector.

Thank you all for everything.

The Yukon Prospector’s Association and I couldn’t be here without you.
