Open letter to Housing Minister Brad Cathers:

This letter has no intention of walking you through why we need affordable housing, as that has been done enough.

We are deeply disappointed in the decision that you have made with the cancellation of the housing project in Whitehorse. There are many organizations and people that have worked so hard in building partnerships, and it seems so unfair to just walk away from affordable housing while so many families are struggling to find affordable rentals or affordable houses.

In the press release, you said: “There are concerns that government subsidization of construction of new commercial rental units in Whitehorse could have unintended negative consequences.” Well, the only real negative consequence seems to have a financial impact on a few from the most prosperous members in our community.

I sincerely doubt your commitments toward affordable housing as you just cancelled a project that would have allowed just that.
