I was running for Kwanlin Dun as a councillor. I decided to withdraw my name as a candidate upon considering what was most important.

Our council is for our children and for protecting their future. I am convinced that my voice will be better heard by being available to serve our children as I am presently doing, rather than by sitting on the council. So I made my choice.

I will continue to speak out as an elder of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation, adding my voice to the voices of all elders of the 14 Yukon First Nations and all First Nations throughout Canada.

I know that we are not going to get anywhere unless we come together as elders. Let us remember what we are fighting for. We need to increase our awareness that our children are going to be the next leaders. What we do today is important for what we will pass on to our children tomorrow.

The children come first. As a people, we won’t have anything to pass on to our children if we do not safeguard our land. If we lose the Peel today, what will be left for our children tomorrow?
