The steamer Monarch weighed 463 tonnes and was built at Ballard, Washington, in 1898.
It was towed to St. Michael, Alaska, from Seattle, Washington.
In later years, it was abandoned at St. Michael.
Many years ago, I acquired a very interesting letter, written around 1898-‘99, from a young miner who was riding the steamer. He was writing his girlfriend, expressing his disappointment about politics and mining in the Klondike.
He said all the promising creeks were already staked and his outlook was grim for his immediate future.
The photograph above was taken by Eric Hegg in 1898.
