I am writing this letter to applaud Education Minister Scott Kent in his efforts to change the policies of the Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Whitehorse.
As the parents of a very young transgendered child, my husband and I have struggled emotionally on our journey to ensure that our child is treated with the same respect and receives the same quality experience and education that every child deserves, and the same education that the Yukon government offers in public schools.
I would at this time like to thank the principal and staff at the school my child attends for making sure that this happens each and every day and for the understanding that no matter what you believe personally she is a child, and your responsibility to her is to make sure that this happens.
Now to Bishop Gary Gordon: if you believe in God, and I assume you must, and you’re basing your judgment of others on what you believe God wants, I have a question for you. If your God creates all children, mine included, was it God that made a mistake with my baby?
I have viewed life in a much clearer, much less judgmental way since Jamie came into our lives and I believe that my love for this child and seeing life through her eyes and watching as she struggles at eight years old to deal with the hate of the world - at an age that no child should have to - has brought me closer to God than any church ever could.
Hate is bred from adults who judge others based on race, gender, religion or whatever other reason they feel they are superior. What a perfect world we would live in if none of these things were passed on to our children and they could live in a world where none of that mattered.
