Trevor Ellis has been acclaimed as Mayo’s mayor while elections are underway for council.

Six people are vying for the four seats on council, including three incumbents: Simeon Paschuk (incumbent), Jo-ann Aird (incumbent), Brent Chapman (incumbent), Chelsea Dolan, Sierra White and Brett Stauffer.

The News circulated questions to all candidates we could obtain contact information for asking a little about them, what they see as the main issues facing their community, what their priorities will be if elected and what they bring to the table as a local government representative. Published below are the answers we received with edits for length and clarity in some cases.

Simeon Paschuk

Simeon Paschuk has lived in Mayo for seven years. Paschuk’s wife and two kids moved to Mayo from Vancouver Island seven years ago and “never looked back.” Paschuk works as an electrician with the Yukon Energy Corporation and volunteers with emergency medical services and the fire department. As for priorities, Paschuk wants to maintain important infrastructure, bringing it up to current standards. Growing recreational infrastructure (like the arena, bike track and disc golf), adding community infrastructure (such as landfill upgrades) and advocating for community support (like health centre and school staff) are top issues. Paschuk brings knowledge on electrical and construction code and methods to the table and understands community involvement and connections around fire and emergency medical services. As a past councillor, Paschuk has background on current issues and a “want to see it through.”

Chelsea Dolan

Mayo has been Chelsea Dolan’s home “for my entire life.” Dolan takes pride in that fact, given a deep love for the community and its vibrant spirit. Dolan serves on the Mayo Recreation Board, holds the position of Mayo Curling Club president and actively volunteers with the emergency medical services team. “Being engaged in community events and spending time on the land with my dog brings me immense joy, and I’m passionate about supporting the connections that make our community strong.” Dolan seeks to learn more about how Mayo’s local government runs to find new ways to contribute to its growth. “My diverse experiences in local organizations give me a unique perspective that I believe will benefit the council.” Dolan is keen to learn about the intricacies of municipal affairs to in turn help others become informed and engaged citizens.

Brett Stauffer

Brett Stauffer’s journey in Mayo, alongside Stauffer’s wife (Robyn) and dog (Bennie), has been one of deep connection and community engagement. Since moving to the village two years ago, Stauffer has embraced the community through various roles. That involvement includes teaching at J.V. Clark School, running an after-school skateboard-making workshop and as a member of the Mayo Volunteer Fire Department. As a relatively new member of the community, Stauffer feels a strong calling to serve in a broader way. “I believe local governance is an important part of truly making a difference in the lives of our neighbours,” Stauffer said. “I aim to foster open communication between residents and local government, ensuring that voices are heard and represented.” Stauffer is eager to listen, learn and collaborate to ensure a thriving community. Stauffer seeks to be an elected representative who stands for honest and fair governance.
