The location for the Squash Yukon League Division 2 champions’ celebratory drinks was an obvious one.

The Gold Rush Inn won the Division 2 title of the league at Better Bodies Whitehorse on Thursday.

The saloon squad captured the division title winning three of four matches against second place’s Why Knot Massage.

“We have a pretty strong team. We’ve had a pretty strong team the whole season,” said Gold Rush captain Marie Maratos. “I think we’ve been in the lead pretty much the whole time. We were consistently winning our games and we were a stacked team from the beginning.”

The Gold Rush was the favourite to win, finishing the regular season far out in front in first place.

Leading the charge for the Gold Rush was the team’s No. 1 player, Ehsan Idrees, who is just 14 years old. Idrees only lost one match since the start of the season in November.

“It was just fun – it was for fun,” said Idrees.

“Every time I’ve watched him I think he’s won,” said Maratos.

In the final Idrees defeated Why Knot sub Victor Lavanderos 3-0. Michael Knutson, Gold Rush’s No. 2, won 3-1 over Shirley Chua.

Maratos lost 3-0 to Amin Hedari while teammate Meagan Wilson defeated Why Knot sub Katrina Russell in straight games.

“They are a fun team to play with. They are competitive but they are fun,” said Russell of her team. “Everyone had a good time and got a work out each week.

“I think the team was competitive all season and I’m not surprised we took second.”

In the battle for third place, Yukon Tree Services chopped down Sterling Insurance.

Tree Service won all four matches, but had a couple tough ones in the mix. Stephen Buckler beat Jonathon Gorton and Cathy MacDonald defeated Linda Aranda, both in five-game matches. Also winning for Tree Services were Gary Tanner and Jeremy Locke.
