A Yukon couple in their 40s spent a chilly night on Lake Laberge after they lost their way in falling darkness and their boat was swamped over the weekend.

The man and woman had been camping at the Lake Laberge campground, and set our for a day of boating and fishing Saturday, said RCMP Cont. Dean Hoogland this morning.

As darkness fell, the couple started to head home but lost their way, and opted to head for shore.

After landing, winds picked up and their boat was swamped by the waves, Hoogland said.

They chose to camp out for the night and seek help in the morning.

RCMP got a call from the man at around 8:45 a.m. Sunday morning, saying he and his wife were stranded somewhere along Lake Laberge.

The couple were able to access GPS devices on their cellphones and boat, said Hoogland, and RCMP launched a rescue boat to pick them up.

RCMP found them in good health and returned them to their camp, he said. The couple plans to make their own arrangements to recover the swamped boat.
