A house fire at Tigerseye Crescent in the Copper Ridge subdivision of Whitehorse was quickly doused on New Year’s Eve thanks to the attention of an off-duty RCMP officer and a neighbour.

Both noticed the fire shortly before 10:30 p.m. The neighbour called the RCMP, and by the time help arrived several minutes later, both the neighbour and off-duty officer had kicked-down the house’s front door and searched the building.

No one else was inside, except for the family dog, which was rescued. The fire’s origins aren’t believed to be suspicious: it was likely started by a heap of ash tossed into the house’s compost heap, said Sgt. Don Rogers.
