A hardware failure during a network upgrade knocked out internet service across Whitehorse Wednesday morning.

The outage affected cable internet subscribers throughout the city for about 30 minutes.

The telco was upgrading the network when an unforeseen failure crashed the system, said Emily Younker, communications manager for Northwestel.

“There was no outage expected,” she said. “It was part of our frequency change upgrades.”

Those upgrades involve moving traffic to separate lines to allow for faster and more reliable speeds, said Younker.

No physical lines are actually moved. “It’s just moving traffic,” she said.
