The city gives out $25,000 a year to non-profits, commercial organizations, schools and community groups for environmental projects.

City staff are recommending council give $1,500 to Whitehorse Elementary School to install a new fish-shaped bike rack and $520 to Friends of McIntyre Creek to print new brochures.

They’re recommending a $1,445 grant to help the Midnight Sun Dive Club with underwater cleanup of Schwatka Lake and $2,450 to help Shannon Powell Consultants monitor the ecological integrity of Chadburn Lake Park.

The Yukon Conservation Society is slated to get $1,500 towards its Caribou Celebration.

City council will vote whether to approve the grants next week.

Even if council approves all of these recommended grants there will be money left over. Up to $13,150 was available for this intake of grants, according to an administrative report to council.

Small projects asking for under $1,000 can ask for money through the year. Larger projects are approved twice a year. The next round of approvals is slated for October.

Leftover money will be added to the pot available for grants in October or get used for minor grants throughout the year.
