Fire briefly closes Watson Lake school

Students at Watson Lake Secondary School will head back to class Thursday morning after fire damage closed the school for two days.

Students at Watson Lake Secondary School will head back to class Thursday morning after fire damage closed the school for two days.

A fire in the food concession area forced 110 high school and some Yukon College students to evacuate the building Monday morning. The school closed while school officials worked to repair damage and air out the building.

Cost of the damage has yet to be determined.

Fire officials determined the electrical fire started with several cardboard boxes being stored near a vending machine.

Along with the usual smoke and water damage, the fire destroyed food and clothing and melted several electrical appliances belonging to the student council.

Acting principal Rollie Comeau said the school is working on plans to make up the lost education days. (J.W.)
