13 Dead Horse Gulch

One of the tragedies of the Klondike Gold Rush was the slaughter of horses at Dead Horse Gulch.

About 2,000 horses died on the trail. Going up that pass and trail was not only extremely dangerous, there was not enough feed for the horses.

Anxious to get to the goldfields, many clearly neglected their horses, and the scarcity of feed worsened the disaster.

Also, I have some front page illustrations of horses on ships heading for the Klondike in 1898—they appear on Harper’s Magazine. The horses had no idea of their fate.
