Yukon News earns national awards

The 2010 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards have just been announced, and Yukon News staff have many reasons to be pleased and proud.

The News placed first in the Best Sports Coverage Category and first in the Best Website contest.

First place for Best Local Editorial went to editor Richard Mostyn for his humorous take on Premier Dennis Fentie’s attempts to secretly privatize Yukon Energy, a publicly owned utility. By exposing the fickle nature of Canadian Immigration officials when it comes to granting refugee status, cartoonist Wyatt Tremblay took a first for Best Local Cartoon. Mike Thomas won a first place for Best Feature Photo with his shot of teens joyriding in a shopping cart.

The News took second place for Best All-Round Newspaper. Richard Mostyn took a second-place award for Best National Editorial. And Ian Stewart placed second in the Best Spot News Photo Coverage category.

The News placed third in the Best Front Page and in the Best Editorial Page categories. John Thompson came in third for Outstanding Reporter Initiative. Genesee Keevil won a third place for Best Historical Story. James Munson won third for Best Environmental Writing. And Mike Thomas took a third for Best Sports Photo.
