We’ve watched the places disappear as the roads have gotten straighter as well.  I don’t miss the curves I’ll say but I will miss the friendly, and yes, quirky folks I’ve encountered along the way.

this is a great article. I have visited most of the lodges interviewed and had the best soup ever at Johnsons Crossing after going down the river in our riverboat with my dad, back in the early 70s. It is sad so many are going under, but as they say, the road is faster, cars get better mileage, and fewer people want or need to stop.
