A grand opening

Don’t aVoid this show!

Dawson-born artist Mark Preston’s new show. Void is on now at Gallery 22. It displays handcut shapes made of rag bond paper on cedar wood frames. Rag bond is heavy-duty paper with rag fibre.

Preston studied his Tlingit ancestry at school and also learned about it through his family. The shapes in his artwork are traditional Tlingit forms.

The exhibit began Thursday but come out Friday for the grand opening starting at 7 p.m. Enjoy the art, food and refreshments!

If you can’t make it out Friday, the show runs until September 14.

Baked photography

Come see images from up North to the landscape of down under.

Photographer Leslie Leong’s images are now splashing colour onto the walls of Baked Cafe.

This is the Northwest Territories artist’s first exhibit in the Yukon. But her work features images all the way from Australia.

Leong’s masterpieces are on display until September 9.

Dress up to paint

Biking in a dress on a summer afternoon is such a romantic image.

But 100 Dresses for Cadence Cycle isn’t quite like that.

Artists Nicole Bauberger, Ariel Durant, Akasha Sage and Pascale Halladay are inviting you to paint with them at the bike shop at 508 Wood Street. They’re there until August 21 from noon to 2 p.m. and again August 23 to 26.

Bring your creativity and $5 for the material fee.

The final pieces will be displayed at Cadence Cycle on August 27 at 5 p.m. until August 28 at 5 p.m.

Paintings that tell a tale

Arts Underground’s new exhibit opens this Friday.

It showcases the work of painter Amber Walker.

Tales expresses Walker’s philosophy about storytelling. She believes it’s important to capture an aspect of the story and make it our own.

Her acrylic paintings capture moods and experiences of the feminine spirit.

The colourful artwork is on display until September 15.

Roll in and support the roller girls!

Watch out for flying elbows at Foxy’s Cabaret this Saturday as the Yukon Roller Girls host their first-ever fundraiser to help secure a practice location and possibly the purchase of a track.

The Debutante’s Brawl, will feature prizes, games, a pillow fight - a staple of classic roller derby - and live music by Wrong Track Freight Train starting at 8 p.m. You can even get your photo with the rockin’ roller girls.

The Roller Girls, decked out in full derby gear, will be charging $10 at the door.

The fledgling organization is hoping to start a local league next year.

FAMILY FUN

All aboard!

If you’re looking for a fun ride this weekend, choo choo choose the Waterfront Trolley.

It’s family week on the rails until Saturday. Children 12 and under ride free and groups of five or more are half price.

Jump aboard on Friday for Customer Appreciation Day. All passengers ride for half price. That’s $1 for one way or $2 for a round trip.

Relax in nature

Tap into your mind, body and spirit while exploring the outdoors.

Certified Iyengar yoga instructor Richard Mueller will guide a yoga hike. He’s also a former plant naturalist.

The two-hour hike takes hikers and yoga enthusiasts of all levels to the Hidden Lakes.

Meet at 10 a.m. on Sunday at Grey Mountain Elementary School.
