Yesterday, I saw a picture of the grocery store shelves in Whitehorse. I was discouraged to say the least.
I always thought that the people of the Yukon were a selfless lot that tended to look out for their neighbours and those less fortunate. At the sight of these empty shelves I saw a side of us that surprised me.
When the road was closed due to the washouts, it seems that some of us in Whitehorse ran to the stores and emptied the shelves of goods that should be shared amongst all the community. Instead, hoarding took over and those who may not have had the wherewithal to get to the stores in time for the big rush would have been left without, including the elderly and the young.
I know there is a real uncertainty in our community, which may be due to the Harper government’s seeming lack of concern for the common man, but surely even our Conservative government would not have left us to starve in the wilderness.
