Open letter to Resources Minister Scott Kent:

I wrote last year that 2015 was going to be the year that we turn this big energy ship around. Our new federal government has recognized the climate problem and are now taking action to reduce our carbon footprint. Canada is joining the rest of the world to fight climate change, which everyone knows is caused by our burning of fossil fuel.

Your recent comment in the Whitehorse Star (Nov. 13) was fully supporting oil and gas development and flies in the face of the reality of climate change. What you really should have said is that you will from now on pull our tax dollars from any more oil and gas development, and put it towards building energy efficiency and a renewable energy economy.

It is also time that you reconcile with First Nations and help them build renewable energy so that they can grow our new economy. Our focus with the mining companies should be to feed them with renewable energy so they can leave us with a positive legacy. The Yukon will become a leader in building this renewable energy economy. I sincerely hope that the COP 21 meeting in Paris will change your mind. Please think about our children.
