Re: Birth certificate rules changing for same-sex parents

Not often are we faced with the task of publicly standing up for our beliefs, but that is exactly what Corinne Gurtler and Cai Krikorian have done this past week. As same-sex parents, they were recently denied the right to have both their names entered on their infant sons’ birth certificate, despite the fact that they are married and a family of four (they have one other son.)

Although sexual orientation has been addressed under the Yukon Human Rights Act since 1987, the territory’s legislation has not managed to keep pace. Apparently, the current sitting of the legislature will rectify this.

It is only by taking action for ourselves when faced with adversity that we can teach our children to do the same. Corinne and Cai, I admire your courage and tenacity, and I’m proud of you both.
